چکیده

For the last 15 years, Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) has become a reference examination for cardiac morphology, function and perfusion in humans. Yet, due to the characteristics of cardiac MR images and to the great variability of the images among patients, the problem of heart cavities segmentation in MRI is still open. This paper is a review of fully and semi-automated methods performing segmentation in short axis images using a cardiac cine MRI sequence. Medical background and specific segmentation difficulties associated to these images are presented. For this particularly complex segmentation task, prior knowledge is required. We thus propose an original categorization for cardiac segmentation methods, with a special emphasis on what level of external information is required (weak or strong) and how it is used to constrain segmentation. After reviewing method principles and analyzing segmentation results, we conclude with a discussion and future trends in this field regarding methodological and medical issues.

Fully automatic segmentation of short and long axis cine cardiac MR

Introduction Quantitative analysis of cardiac function requires delineation of the left ventricle (LV) in cine cardiac MR (CMR). Typically, this is done using short-axis (SA) images, however, acquisition of several long-axis (LA) views has become quite common. The latter can be used for the accurate and reproducible determination of the basal SA slice, known as one of the major inter-observer v...

Quantitative Comparison of SPM, FSL, and Brainsuite for Brain MR Image Segmentation

Background: Accurate brain tissue segmentation from magnetic resonance (MR) images is an important step in analysis of cerebral images. There are software packages which are used for brain segmentation. These packages usually contain a set of skull stripping, intensity non-uniformity (bias) correction and segmentation routines. Thus, assessment of the quality of the segmented gray matter (GM), ...

Comparison of state-of-the-art atlas-based bone segmentation approaches from brain MR images for MR-only radiation planning and PET/MR attenuation correction

Introduction: Magnetic Resonance (MR) imaging has emerged as a valuable tool in radiation treatment (RT) planning as well as Positron Emission Tomography (PET) imaging owing to its superior soft-tissue contrast. Due to the fact that there is no direct transformation from voxel intensity in MR images into electron density, itchr('39')s crucial to generate a pseudo-CT (Computed Tomography) image ...

Semi-Automatic 4D Fuzzy Connectedness Segmentation of Heart Ventricles in Cine MRI

The volumes of the left and right cardiac ventricles are important indexes for several cardiovascular diseases. In this paper, a semiautomatic algorithm based on 4D fuzzy connectedness is proposed for segmenting the cardiac ventricles in arbitrarily oriented cardiac cine MR images. The segmentation of the left ventricle was evaluated using 45 short axis images and a visual assessment of right v...

Methodology for rapid Cardiac Axis generation from non gated cardiac MR images

Introduction: Cardiac Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) is an excellent tool in analysis of left ventricular (LV) functioning[3]. Short axis cardiac MR images are most suitable to study the LV function [4], but preparation for generating these images is time consuming and requires sound understanding of the cardiac anatomy. Accurate and reproducible determination of short axis to study the LV fu...
